20 years on after Expo 88, and on the same site - what the site has evolved to anyway, some of the acts that were performed there were brought out again for another run.
This guy was a bit suss.
The only things I remember about Expo 88 are: Gondwanaland, queuing and being tantrumously upset when it was over.

On day seven we took an inter-island flight to O'ahu. Immediately it was obvious that this island had a completely different atmosphere.
Much more of a party place.
I finally got to have my cocktail.

Today: Haleakalā (that's Haleakala, with the 'a' having a macron, if this gets mangled in your browser).
Another view from the resort; and Maui swap-meet markets
Poor man's panoramic of the crater, nearly 10,000 feet up.
This volcano is considered still active, but it hasn't erupted for over 100 years. When it does, however, eruptions aren't explosive and the lava flows slowly, so people have the opportunity to walk out of the way. The car started to struggle at 9k feet.
There were some good walking tracks, but Lui wasn't able to walk more than a few metres at this altitude (too risky for baby). Being above the clouds, it seemed earlier than it actually was; At 4pm it still seemed like midday and it felt like I could have walked down in to the crater and back, but then it would have been quite dark for the trip back. Next time, perhaps?

Today: Molokini & Turtle Arches Snorkel
We rented a waterproof camera for the day.
Around this time I developed seasickness. I put it down to having the wrong magnification in my goggles (I had +3, maybe should have gone with less).
Lui take photos of butts lol
And we swam with turtles.
We didn't swim with whales, but did happen to see some nearby.
Cute bird like pringles. Newlyweds like curly fries.
Sunset at Lahaina.
Geek eye: At Safeway a dozen is NULL.

Today: Hana Highway.
15mph speed limit most of the way on this highway.
Kalaloa Point (I think), and view over Ke'anae Peninsula
No shortage of waterfalls here.
Is that black sand? Why, yes it is. This is Pa'iloa Beach in Wai'anapanapa State Park.

My quest continues to try every iced coffee available on the planet.
Lahaina: Apparently the owner of this boat couldn't afford to have it removed and it is now the property of the state. Or I could be repeating something I read on the internet. 2nd pic is just one banyan tree (like a fig tree), planted in 1873. No lens in my arsenal could get all of it in one picture.
Two beaches: first somewhere along the road - not far from Lahaina. Second was Napili Beach.
And this is DT Fleming Beach Park - apparently the best beach in the world.
Stopped at some random places to snooze... this one was a cemetery. Every parking spot was marked "No parking". Even with the coffee, driving on the wrong side of the road needs more concentration than normal.
Lots of great places to stop at and see on this highway.
Views from the resort.
A magic sunset to top it all off.

After living Monday March 22nd twice over (once before the international date line and once after) we picked up the hire car at Kahalui and drove over to Wailea to check in.
The room at the resort was excellent, with enough space to properly stretch out, and a view of the ocean.
American heaven: a tube of Pringles and a fridge full of Dr Pepper.

Chalk and Alex bought and cooked a turducken, and invited us all around to help consume it.
Making gravy, slicing up, making a mess. (You're meant to leave it for an hour after cooking, but we were hungry.)
Yes, we ated the whole thing!
The duck, chicken and turkey were all amazing - so moist.

Our front room's window has a reflective coating that helps keep the heat down (just a bit). Unfortunately birds like to fly in to it at full speed as it looks like sky to them.
One such bird was this, which Lui identified as a juvenile Black Faced Cuckoo Shrike. It seemed dazed and couldn't or wouldn't fly. We kept it in a shoebox overnight to see if it just needed some time. The next morning we let it out, but not all parts of it seemed to be working, and it only just made it over our fence before crash landing in next door's garden. Another night in the box and it was able to fly in a low curve around our house and out of sight. No idea if it made it to safety.
