Monday, January 5, 2009Today the purchase contract for our new house went unconditional. After fretting for hours and days over the finance, it all went smoothly today and now we have 10-14 days until settlement. Wahoo!
Apologies if you are reading this via livejournal, and you get another flood of posts. Lachlan0r pointed out that I had broken some rss readers with the update. If livejournal sees that the content of a post is significantly different (changing all of the links in a post qualifies) it will show that post as a new one again.

I think this guy is on to something. It's not like he is holding the traffic up on Victoria Bridge.
Sunday, January 4, 2009The year in review
--------------------
Saw 2008 in on the west coast of Scotland.
Saw our first (and only) proper snow fall in UK.
Did lots of exploring of England and Wales by car, train, bus and foot.
Went to America for a week and a half, visiting two and a bit states.
Moved back to Australia, moved in with Dad at Moggill.
Bought two cars, gave one away.
Bought a house (contract still conditional right now).
Witnessed first death.
Coding method changed from ssh screen session on server + many pico windows, to a vm and php ide.
Finally finished blog v2 (in development for two years).
Saw some plays/musicals: Spamalot(London), The Mikado(Brisbane), Nunsense(Brisbane).
Started my photography business.
Took fewer photos, but higher quality ones.
Did not take a single analogue photograph all year.
More or less
-------------
Same weight
Less hair (3 blade)
More exercise
What's in store next year
--------------------------
Complete purchase of the house & move in.
Do more regular walking exercise.
Get photography business movng again (currently on hold due to heat - new house has air con which will help).
Get a permanent government job.
Saturday, January 3, 2009I have put up a few minor updates to the site. In this version:
- Images click through to an info page (there is no info on any images yet but you can leave comments).
- Comments left on individual images appear on the main post. This includes comments whored received via other sites (livejournal, facebook, photosig, photoblog, etc).
That's about it for now.
I'm still making some changes to how the images are cached, but the result should be faster loading (less server action for each image).
As always, please let me know what you think.

This is not the kind of thing you want to see in your house. In the wild storms over the weekend, many people had their homes destroyed, or at the very least their roofs ripped off. This house was apparently built to a higher standard, but the ridge cap at the top of the roof was lifted in the storm and water started coming in in the following days. Dad got up there and tightened it up, and tarred up the gaps.

Bacardi doesn't like storms.
Tuesday, December 30, 2008Somewhat related to the last post, Hostmonster didn't take kindly to what I was doing with the images, and cancelled my account without warning. I shouldn't be surprised - it's only the fourth time they've done it. They did reinstate it, but not before insulting my mother. Fairly sure I'll be taking my $3/mo elsewhere at the end of this hosting period.

02/01/2009 | I was storing full-sized images (3000+px) on the server, and the image script resizes it when someone requests it, in whatever size they ask for. Hostmonster got shitty that I was hosting >2mb files, which I don't see as being against their T&Cs. |

Sunday, December 28, 2008So I have a nice new coding setup, which involves a virtual machine and an IDE that knows PHP. After 18 hours of hacking away yesterday, I've succeeded in making page loads take anywhere from 6 seconds to 45 seconds (before images).
Back to the drawing board?

Getting suited up for mowing. This cut down the amount of sunburn and the volume of dirt that went in my nose and mouth.

Apparently sweet potato is easy to grow, so we've decided to give it a go.
That's one nasty vine!
