:: Starship Junkyard

No caption available.

Starship Junkyard is a BBS that was online from 1994 to 2005, and is now back online as of 31 October 2009.

To Access to BBS:
You can log in via the web (requires Flash).
If you have your own telnet client, point it to to dropbear.ath.cx
If you're after a telnet client, mTelnet is a decent client for Windows. PuTTY also works well.

What's there? Currently:

I'm open to suggestions of games or features to add. Twitter @limefruit, email starship.junkyard.bbs@gmail.com, or the Starship Junkyard Facebook group.

In the spirit of the BBSing era, Starship Junkyard is running on donated hardware, and is plugged in to an overloaded power board.

BBS History:

There's a lot to say, and I'm slowly gathering material from around the net, BBS archives, and my paper archives from that era.

= History =

== 1992 ==
December:
First computer and modem installed at our house. We got online with OzEmail (then a BBS with custom interface software).

== 1993 ==
Downloaded Procomm to get NAV updates from their BBS in Sydney. Found BBS adverts in computer mags.

== 1994 ==
March:
Faced with growing phone bills, and at age 12 without any actual way of paying them, decided to open my own BBS.

June:
Started testing. Named "The Eclipse BBS", and running on Ezycom 1.10.

December 2nd:
Opened the doors. Named "Starship Junkyard", and running on Maximus 2.00.
Opening hours were Friday and Saturday nights only, 10pm-6am. Phone (07) 202 8498.

== 1995 ==
April:
Archive ad dated 1995-04-18

== 1996 ==
Feburary:
An offline notice placed on Usenet alt.bbs.ads (I presume I got in trouble for phone bills and wasn't allowed to use the line for a while. Mustn't have lasted long.)

An ad placed on Usenet alt.bbs.ads

July:
An ad placed on Usenet alt.bbs.ads

July: A dialin node added: 07-3844-4039. Telstra were running a "free second line" deal so I got it put on. Only one guy ever used it, and he only used it once a month. Cut it off a few months later.

== 2004 ==
Lost interest in running the BBS. Kept it going because it didn't need any maintenance.

== 2005 ==
Tuesday, February 22, 2005. Pulled the plug.

Some screen shots taken from the last backup after it was shut down.

Over the years, imagine how many users with the nickname "New" you may have collected without that prompt.
