Denial wasn't working any more - the Lancer was sprouting rust in the roof.
The internets quickly revealed that this is a Lancer problem, throughout all models up to 1997. Conflicting explanations for the reason, but the one I decided to believe was that the wrong glue was used between the roof and the ribs, which causes water retention and eventually rusts through. I've seen some horrible examples on the net, and around and about on the road with my own eyes - ours is a very mild case.
Panel beater cut it out for me and repainted the roof, for $300. By all accounts, it tends to re-occur and the only permanent fix is a whole new roof (at the cost of approx ten fix-ups). (I don't think the 1993 CC Lancer GL has much chance of becoming a 'classic car' requiring such attention and preservation...)
