Today: Haleakalā (that's Haleakala, with the 'a' having a macron, if this gets mangled in your browser).
Another view from the resort; and Maui swap-meet markets
Poor man's panoramic of the crater, nearly 10,000 feet up.
This volcano is considered still active, but it hasn't erupted for over 100 years. When it does, however, eruptions aren't explosive and the lava flows slowly, so people have the opportunity to walk out of the way. The car started to struggle at 9k feet.
There were some good walking tracks, but Lui wasn't able to walk more than a few metres at this altitude (too risky for baby). Being above the clouds, it seemed earlier than it actually was; At 4pm it still seemed like midday and it felt like I could have walked down in to the crater and back, but then it would have been quite dark for the trip back. Next time, perhaps?
