Location:

Alexandra Headland, Sunshine Coast

The setup:

Staying at an apartment up the Sunshine Coast, I thought it would be a great time to get some night-time beach shots. I’ve also never tried a long exposure of water before.

I didn’t have my tripod so had to rely on leaning the camera on a railing (using a pen for tilt). I did have my cable release but forgot about it!

The camera & lens:

Camera: Canon EOS 400D
Lens: Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX-DC
Exposure: 30″ @ f/2.2, ISO 100

Post processing:

Lightroom –

1. Curves: Highlights +10, lights +45, darks +30, shadows -20
2. Exposure +0.9, recovery +20, fill light +20, blacks +20 (all of the above intended to increase contrast). Saturation +15
3. Clarity +100 (to give definition to the rocks)
4. Noise reduction: Luminance +45, Detail +100
5. Lightroom lens correction for the Sigma lens – corrects a bit of distortion

What I don’t like and/or would have done differently:

If I had remembered the cable release, I would have used that and taken a many-minute shot. A smaller aperture would have helped sharpness a lot. Also if I had brought along my tripod, I could have set up in a better location.

What this photo beat to be chosen:

A shot from the headland over the bay. It was nice, but in no way original or a challenge – except for the long exposure smoothing out the waves. I would have used it if the above shot hadn’t turned out.
