Location:

The summit, Mt Coot-tha, Brisbane

The setup:

While mucking around at the summit, Evelyn made friends with a little dog named Mika.

She also wanted to make friends with a chocolate labrador but by the time I got through asking its owner if it was okay with kids, Evelyn had already run off.

The camera & lens:

Camera: Canon EOS 400D
Lens: Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX-DC + polariser
Exposure: 1/125″ @ f/2.8, ISO 200 (P)

Post processing:

Lightroom -

Auto apply a B&W preset I have called “PSKiss-FilmStyleBW-01″. It auto applies curves (lights +60, darks -12, shadows -12), brightness +45, contrast +45, clarity +50 and increases the colour mixes in all channels, but mainly green and aqua.

What I don’t like and/or would have done differently:

I cut off all limbs in sight, and the aperture is too wide at f/2.8 (Mika’s face is in crisp focus, while Evelyn’s is slightly off.) I had ISO 200 set which I don’t normally do, but I had been shooting bright scenes just before and had not changed settings back.

What I don’t like and/or would have done differently:

Happy with the composition. If you take the elements of the photograph in isolation, it doesn’t make much sense (he is looking away from the city). I guess the interpretation depends whether you’ve been there, or to a place similar, and the layout of your own city.

Lightroom -

As a base, applied a preset called Bidong’s Black and White. It is a preset with medium-high contrast.

Presence: Recovery +100, black clipping +100, clarity +100

Curves: highlights, lights and darks all +100, shadows -25

Spot adjustment: there was a lot of crap on the platter, so I added a spot adjustment to everything that isn’t lemon, exposure -4 stops.

What I don’t like and/or would have done differently:

I would have put the two halves closer together. I was also thinking of a tighter crop with some of each half cut off – for a less-is-more picture. If anyone wants to try, feel free!

This is a fly that flew in to a tupperware tub and stay there. Seemed perfectly preserved, and I’ve been thinking of more things that I can make a picture via using the scanner. Sometimes the next photographic subject just buzzes up and lands in your lap, so to speak.

Lots of spot adjustments for specks on the scanner platter.

What I don’t like and/or would have done differently:

I had to try a few times to make sure the scanner lid was not touching the fly. When it did touch the fly, it would lift one of the wings off the platter and take it out of focus. It is still slightly out of focus but it’s the best I could do.
