Just before setting off on my Surfers Paradise to Ipswich ride (106km), I sat and watched the beach for a bit. This is a still frame taken from video, for my One Second Per Day project.

The camera & lens:

Camera: Sony RX100 II
Lens: Sony RX100M2 fixed lens 10.4-37.1mm f/1.8-4.9 (28-105mm equivalent) @ 10.4mm
ISO 160 (Movie mode - still taken from a video)

Post processing:

Lightroom 5 -

  1. Frame extracted from video (1080p).
  2. Otherwise straight out of camera

A man riding a boogie board and being splashed by a wave

Location:

Surfers Paradise, Gold Coast
General location: Australia, South-East Queensland

The Setup:

I took the water camera and my fisheye 0.42x filter into the surf for some boogie boarding fun. The surf was rough and I lost the filter when I got dumped off a wave (that was a risk I knowingly took), but I got the shot (and video) I wanted anyway.

This is a still from video, and was taken after I lost the fisheye filter.

The camera & lens:

Camera: Fuji FinePix XP60
Lens: Fuji FinePix XP60 fixed lens 5-25mm (28-140mm equiv) f/3.9-4.9

Two protesters during the march.

Lens: Sony RX100M2 fixed lens 10.4-37.1mm f/1.8-4.9 (28-105mm equivalent) @ 10.4mm
Exposure: 1/200" @ f/1.8, ISO 6400 (Shutter priority - 1/200, Auto ISO up to 6400)

Post processing:

This photo was quite underexposed at a very high ISO (I had it on shutter priority, which was the only way to get a clear shot while marching). So here is a delicate reconstruction from a very poor starting point.

Lightroom 5 -

  1. Basic: Exposure +0.5 stops, highlights +100, shadows +100, white clipping +90, black clipping -55 (all to brighten the image, then darken the black level down again)
  2. Temperature: -250 from 3800 to 3550, saturation -25.
  3. Individual colour saturation: Purple -90, magenta -50 (to counter the very heavy magenta/purple cast left after above steps)
  4. Noise Reduction: Luminance +20, colour +70
So the end result looks like it came out of Instagram - which wasn't my aim, but I'm happy with the result given the starting point.

North Ipswich
General location: Australia, South-East Queensland

The Setup:

We took Evelyn to see 'Frozen' at the cinema, a movie that ticks enough boxes. Second time at the cinema for Evelyn and first time since she became a self-aware neural network. The big screen and loud noises scared her enough that we had to carry her out a few times and ended up missing the end.

Also a harsh lesson that not everything can be paused like PVR and Netflix. No, we can't go back and watch the rest - it finished without us.

The camera & lens:

Camera: Sony RX100 II
Lens: Sony RX100M2 fixed lens 10.4-37.1mm f/1.8-4.9 (28-105mm equivalent) @ 10.4mm
Exposure: 1/4" @ f/1.8, ISO 3200 (3/10 Av, auto ISO limited to ISO 3200)

Post processing:

Lightroom 5 -

  1. Crop & rotate
  2. Convert to B&W
  3. Basic: Highlights -30, shadows -100, white clipping -100, black clipping -70 (The camera auto exposed trying to brighten everything, but I wanted to return the scene to the darkness of the cinema).

The wash-up:

Moving to manual exposure (or even exposure compensation) would have helped here as I could have chosen a faster shutter speed. I didn't want it that bright anyway.

The Setup:

I see this shot often and I've been lusting after it for months. Sacrifice: when I'm out for a run, stopping for a minute or two to take this shot means my run-time is going to be rubbish. Worth it, in this case.

Result of post-processing has been a slightly HDRish look. Up to the viewer to decide if that is justified - I think it adds to the juxtaposition.

A fly caught in a spider web

Location:

At home, Ipswich
General location: Australia, South-East Queensland

The Setup:

We had some flies, and we have a pet spider.

Pet spider is only welcome until she lays eggs... then not welcome.

The camera & lens:

Camera: Sony RX100 II
Lens: Sony RX100M2 fixed lens 10.4-37.1mm f/1.8-4.9 (28-105mm equivalent) @ 10.4mm
Exposure: 1/100" @ f/3.2, ISO 400 (0/10)

Post processing:

Lightroom 5 -

  1. Heavy crop
  2. Exposure +0.25 stops, shadows +100 (to bring up the detail of the fly)
  3. Sharpening: Amount +40, detail +100 (really helped with the detail of the hairs)
  4. Noise reduction: Luminance +40, detail +100, color +70 (bringing lots of detail from the shadows also brought in a lot of noise)

Sunshine Coast, Qld
General location: Australia, South-East Queensland

The Setup:

This is an abandoned factory on the Sunshine Coast. Went there with urbex pals Al, Mick, David and Cameron.

A conveyor belt, presumably a sorting machine. David's brake lights randomly turn on every now and again, and they did this while I was setting up the test shot. Test shot came out quite nicely, so I lit this with my other light saber (which still has a working red LED).

The camera & lens:

Camera: Canon EOS 650D
Lens: Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 USM IS @ 15mm
Exposure: 120" @ f/3.5, ISO 400 (0/1)

Post processing:

Lightroom 5 -

  1. Colour temperature - tungsten
  2. Manual perspective correction: Rotate +1.0, distortion +10 (didn't do a full perspective correction as the result was quite flat-looking).
  3. Presence: Highlights -60, shadows +50, white clipping -100, clarity +30
  4. Noise reduction: Luminance +30, colour +100

This is the front building, and the only area with any noticeable graffiti. Tried to shoot this first up to catch some lightning to the left. However the rain was also hitting straight on the lens, which wasn't optimal. Came back once the rain had stopped.

The camera & lens:

Camera: Canon EOS 650D
Lens: Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 USM IS @ 15mm

  1. Auto level (horizontal) perspective correction
  2. Presence: Highlights -100, shadows +70, white clipping -100, black clipping -10, clarity +45
  3. Graduated filter - top left to middle (to adjust the sky): Highlights -100, shadows +100, clarity +100

A silo lit by a red light

Location:

Sunshine Coast, Qld
General location: Australia, South-East Queensland

The Setup:

This is an abandoned factory on the Sunshine Coast. Went there with urbex pals Al, Mick, David and Cameron.

This is the silo and assorted supporting parts. Lit by my lightsaber buried under a pile of rubbish. The red LED died (or maybe just disconnected) part way through this.

A challenge in this shot was the high temperature (even at midnight) causing higher than normal sensor noise.

The camera & lens:

Camera: Canon EOS 650D
Lens: Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 USM IS @ 15mm
Exposure: 120" @ f/3.5, ISO 400 (0/1)

What happened in 2013

  • Finally got a programming job (secondment)
  • Increased running range (5km in January, up to 13.5km in December)
  • Increased riding range (semi-regular 40km rides)
  • Started using Citycycle for shorter rides
  • Got a noisy exhaust for Lancer (finally!)
  • Lui completed verandah renovation
  • Lui got an internship at Suncorp
  • Lui almost top of her degree, full time, external student
  • Evelyn now in kindy
  • Took Evelyn for lots of bike rides, lots of swims
  • Learned some French, though not enough
  • Increased programming prowess (finally got a working version of World going – 9 years after first attempt)
  • Started working from home part of the time (company initiative)
  • Officially recognised at work as a Knowledge Worker (instead of that annoying guy who knows stuff)

More or Less

  • Less hair, as always
  • Less stress
  • Less frustration
  • Same weight
  • Less camping (sadly)
  • More running speed

Next year

  • One Second Per Day video project
  • More camping (more than zero)
  • Permanent in the programming job (hopefully!)
  • Less weight
  • More French (France trip not likely for 2015, maybe 2017).
  • More running speed – I have hit the maximum time that I can run in mornings, must increase speed
  • More running distance – combined with above, goal is half-marathon by August.
  • More riding – planning a riding holiday in March
  • Get rid of Amazon S3, to eliminate unpredictable costs
  • Develop usability on photoblog site
  • Develop One Line Per Day diary project into public service

In summary, the year started out shit and slowly improved. In September, I found the kickdown switch in the 120Y of life.

Two men practicing tai chi along the South Bank of the Brisbane River, with Brisbane CBD buildings in the background.

Location:

Southbank, Brisbane
General location: Australia, South-East Queensland

The Setup:

Similar to a shot I took for my 365 project. Riding along the river at Southbank, stopped to snap this. Challenge was to take something with rather mediocre colours and make something out of it.

The camera & lens:

Camera: FinePix XP60
Lens: Fuji FinePix XP60 fixed lens 5-25mm (28-140mm equiv) f/3.9-4.9 @ 8.6mm
Exposure: 1/450" @ f/7.1, ISO 100 (0/100)

Post processing:

Lightroom 5 -

  1. Presence: Highlights -100, shadows +35, white clipping +40, black clipping -45, clarity +50, saturation -60
  2. Curves: Lights +15, darks -10, shadows -40
  3. Noise reduction: Luminance +30, detail +100

Lui made these cookies as gifts for Christmas. They are currently sitting under the air conditioner so they don't melt. Dappled light courtesy of new verandah.

The camera & lens:

Camera: Canon EOS 650D
Lens: Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX-DC @ 30mm
Exposure: 1/50" @ f/2, ISO 125 (0/1)

Post processing:

Lightroom 5 -

  1. Auto perspective correction
  2. Profile correction for Sigma 30mm
  3. Manual perspective correction - horizontal -2 (using the grid helped)
  4. Crop
  5. Presence: Highlights -50, shadows +50, white clipping +65, black clipping -25, clarity +15
  6. Since the dappled light + centre metering resulting in slight blowouts at top right and bottom left corners, I used two graduated filters in those spots with highlights -50.
