Brisbane City
General location: Australia, South-East Queensland

The Setup:

This is a laneway off Adelaide Street, and I've been shooting around the area.

I took some test shots here and over the next few days I'll come back and reshoot the ones that worked.

The camera & lens:

Camera: Canon EOS 400D DIGITAL
Lens: Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX-DC @ 30mm
Exposure: 1/1250" @ f/1.8, ISO 100

Post processing:

Lightroom -

  1. Auto apply a B&W preset I have called "PSKiss-FilmStyleBW-01". It auto applies curves (lights +60, darks -12, shadows -12), brightness +45, contrast +45, clarity +50 and increases the colour mixes in all channels, but mainly green and aqua.
  2. Further curves: lights +90, darks -25, shadows -10
  3. Blacks +15
  4. Graduated filter with exposure +1 - see below
The area in the top left had been left dark and muddy after the B&W conversion and any efforts to lighten it had bad effects on the rest of the picture. The graduated filter let me lighten that area in a way that (to me) looks natural - it looks like it could be lit like that naturally. The thumbnail in the top left of the screen shot shows what it looked like before.

The wash-up:

I'm chuffed, although I still don't feel comfortable shooting strangers.
