Location:At home, Ipswich
General location: Australia, South-East Queensland
The Setup:Mum sent over this beautiful bird mobile for Evelyn, for Christmas. She sells very nice hand-made stuff at House of Shallana.
My main idea was to place this over Evelyn's cot while she was asleep and photograph the two of them, but that quickly unravelled when she was refusing to sleep. I couldn't risk turning on the light and using the noisy clunking SLR to photograph the scene (though I reckon it would have been excellent), since it had already taken two hours to get her to sleep the first time. Instead I made do with this "safe" photo, taken long before we tried to set her down to sleep. I try to take a safe photo in case the experimental one does not work out.
The camera & lens:Camera: Canon EOS 400D DIGITAL
Exposure: 1/30" @ f/25/10, ISO 1600
- Presence: exposure +0.6 stops, blacks +15
- Colour temperature: -880 to 2920K - camera's auto-white balance definitely errs on the yellow side. In the photo as shot, the beak of the right bird was almost the same colour as the wallpaper. Adjusting the white balance set them apart and this was a lot easier than tracing edges or adjusting colour mixes (neither of which would have had a very satisfying result).
- Noise reduction: luminance +50 (the out-of-focus wallpaper was particularly noisy)
- ACR lens profile correction for Sigma 30mm
- Vignette: post-crop -30
The wash-up:Other angles, otherwise no other photos taken today.
