Long exposure and lightpainting with an orb, wavy lines, graffiti and startrails.

Seven Hills TAFE, Brisbane
General location: Australia, South-East Queensland

The Setup:

This is up on the roof of the block. Blue light using one of Alan's flashlights, orb with Alan's orb tool, and wavy lines with my light sabers. Five minute exposure to get some star movement, with two-odd minutes of light painting and the rest to capture the ambient light.

The camera & lens:

Camera: Canon EOS 650D
Lens: Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 USM IS @ 15mm
Exposure: 301" @ f/8, ISO 100 (M, bulb mode with intervalometer)

Post processing:

Lightroom 4 -

  1. Colour temperature: set to 11200K which reddened the sky and brightened the eye.
  2. Presence: Highlights +80, shadows -100, white clipping +65, black clipping +15
  3. Graduated filter in the sky: Exposure +0.2 stops, clarity +60, sharpness +100 (to bring out the star trails a bit)
  4. Noise reduction: luminance +15, colour +75 (lots of colour noise in these long exposures)

The wash-up:

The small star trails look smeary to me and not really that attractive!
